How do I take care of my new insect art?

Taking care of insect taxidermy is quite easy!

Put simply, keep your piece in a dry location with low humidity, display in a bright area but out of direct sunlight, and inspect your collection regularly for pests or other contaminants.

See our Care Guide for the full run down.

What's the 'tree planted' thing? Is it legit?

Yes! It's legit!

Reforestation benefits wildlife, local communities, increases biodiversity & absorbs carbon from the atmosphere.

For every order we take, a native tree is planted. This is powered by Ecologi. We chose Ecologi as we value their transparency and honest desire to make an impact. They ensure a wide variety of native trees are planted and protected, enabling them to grow into the huge trees that truly make a difference.

You can check out their helpful article on responsible reforestation for more in-depth information.

Is it ethical & sustainable?

Ethics and sustainability are at the heart of what we do. It's a complex topic and we're committed to transparency. To answer the question: Yes, we believe Insect Taxidermy can be ethical & sustainable when it is done responsibly.

If you care for a deep-dive into the ethics and sustainability please read on. We're always happy to discuss ethics, so please contact us if you have a question we've left unanswered.

The Environment & Sustainability:

We have an incredible love for the environment and all the creatures we preserve. Sustainability, to us, means our practices do not negatively impact the environment or contribute to species decline. We are thoughtful regarding where we source our specimens, and ensure we aren't impacting the natural ecosystem. We believe there is no point in making a life immortal if this puts their existence as a species at risk.

We have a tree planted for every order we take. This is a cost we absorb, reflecting our commitment to support the environments that inspire us.

We do not support the collection of animals for 'trophies' and we avoid anything that places profit before ecological responsibility.

Why We Don't Sell Bats:

We do not, and will never, sell bats. Bats are almost impossible to acquire ethically or sustainably. They don't readily breed in captivity and as a result all bat specimens on the market have been poached from their native habitat. Unfortunately, these wild populations cannot reproduce fast enough to counter their many environmental pressures. Bats can be purchased and used legally, however the countries they are sourced from often do not have any laws protecting the species. Many bat species' survival is becoming increasingly threatened and the demand for taxidermy bats is only putting more stress on fragile bat populations.

If you're searching for bat taxidermy we recommend high quality replicas instead. Some of the skeleton replicas are even based on old specimens at museums, so they're identical to the real thing.

Butterflies & Insects:

Our butterflies and insects are sourced from insect breeders and butterfly farms. Captive bred butterflies have a positive impact on conservation, by supporting species restoration, habitat protection and community livelihoods. Many farms release a portion of their insects back into the wild.

It varies per species but most butterflies lay hundreds of eggs, most of which do not survive to adulthood in the wild. Butterfly farms ensure a large amount of these reach the adult stage, where they are kept in netted enclosures called flight houses and are encouraged to mate. They are provided with host plants where they lay their eggs for the next generation of caterpillars to feed on. It's important to note that unlike 'traditional' farming of animals, butterflies and other insects cannot be forced into mating, or overbred. The farmers must ensure they're providing the best habitat for the butterflies; if they don't have everything they need to flourish they simply won't breed successfully. Most species of butterfly only live for a week or two before passing naturally after laying eggs.

Butterfly & insect farms have several benefits:

  • Captive breeding can support wild populations
  • Provides sustainable income for local communities
  • Reduces demand for wild caught specimens
  • Creates incentive to protect natural habitats
  • Supports education around biodiversity and pollinators

Wild caught specimens are limited to approved species and regulated quantities, with the appropriate permits. Insects generally have high reproductive rates, and endangered or vulnerable species are never taken. In some regions, regulated collection provides economic incentive to preserve ecosystems rather than convert land for more destructive uses.

Invasive Animals:

We are based in Australia, where introduced species have caused significant harm to native wildlife.

We often utilise invasive animals in our works, such as foxes, rabbits, feral cats, cane toads, feral pigeons, indian mynas and monarch butterflies. These animals have been removed from the environment as pest control and we source them from a variety of places.

Although not the animal's fault, it is now our responsibility to protect our irreplaceable wildlife from threats we introduced. We aim to give these specimens a second life where they will be cherished and appreciated.

We respect the lives of the specimens we work with & wish to share their beauty, honouring them with immortality.

Are the insects high quality?

Yes! We only use the best specimens and preserve them with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring they look perfect for many years to come.

All of our specimens are real, and natural variation is to be expected. We assess each insect and give them a grading, which helps to outline any natural imperfections the specimen may have. This can be found in the product description. Grading definitions change per entomologist however the below is the system we use, so you know exactly what you're getting.

Grading Definitions:

A1: As perfect as possible for a natural product

A1-: Generally one tiny imperfection such as very minor scale damage, slight scuffing or a very small scratch.

A-: Some minor damage to the wings or body. This could include flight wear like small scratches, slight scale damage, very small chips or fraying around the edges of the wings.

A2: Significant damage due to flight wear, such as rips or pieces missing from wings, staining or discoloration of the wings or more obvious scale loss.

Please Note: For butterflies, missing or damaged antennae or legs don't result in a lower grade.

It is also standard for Morpho species to be preserved without an abdomen. This prevents major staining on their beautiful blue wings.

If you're ever uncertain about the quality of a specimen please reach out to us via our contact page or social media. We're more than happy to send photos of the exact specimen you'll receive for your approval.

What if my order arrives damaged?

If your order arrives damaged, please contact us within 48 hours of delivery and include clear photos of the item and packaging. We take great care to ensure all items are securely packaged; however, if a breakage occurs, we will assess the damage and work with you to resolve the issue.

Due to the one-of-a-kind nature of many of our pieces we may not always be able to offer an exact replacement. In these cases, you may choose a different piece of equal value, or a full refund.

Can I request a specific species or pose?

Certainly! Please contact us to discuss the species you're after and the pose you'd like your specimen set in.

How long will it last?

Our items are made to last! Preserved insect specimens can stay in perfect condition for hundred of years. We've done most of the work in the preserving and mounting process, all you need to do is follow our simple care instructions and your new piece will give you many years of viewing pleasure.

What's the packaging like?

We pride ourselves on being environmentally conscious with our packaging materials. We do not purchase new plastic packaging.

Your order may be packaged using bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or other plastic materials; however, these are all reused. Unfortunately, many of our suppliers ship materials to us using plastic, and instead of sending these items to landfill, we repurpose them to safely package your order.

This means your package may include a mix of materials, such as reused plastic alongside cardboard and paper-based packaging. While it may not look like fancy branded packaging, it allows us to reduce waste while still ensuring your order is carefully packed and arrives safely.

We hope that when your order arrives, you'll also be able to repurpose some of the packing materials.

Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!

But I still have an unanswered question!

Not to worry! We're full of answers. Please contact us here or via social media and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
